FAQ

What is plaque, and why is its removal important?

Plaque is a sticky film of bacteria that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease if not removed. Regular professional cleanings eliminate plaque and tartar, which brushing alone cannot fully remove.

How often should I schedule teeth cleaning?

Most people benefit from teeth cleaning every six months. However, individuals with high risk for cavities or periodontitis will require more frequent visits.

Can teeth cleaning help with bad breath?

Yes, teeth cleaning removes odor-causing bacteria and food particles, significantly improving the freshness of your breath. At your hygiene visit, we can also detect any cavities which contribute significantly to bad breath.

Can teeth cleaning whiten my teeth?

Many patients experience a brighter smile after their cleanings. While cleaning removes surface stains, it does not bleach teeth. For brighter results, you can explore professional whitening options.

What is the difference between dental cleaning and deep cleaning?

Dental cleaning focuses on removing plaque and tartar above the gumline, while deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) treats gum disease by targeting build-up below the gumline. Deep cleaning is recommended for those who have active gum disease and bone loss around the tooth. Once bone is lost, it cannot grow back but only remains stable at its new position. This makes your maintenance visits all the more critical to stabilizing the bone you do have. When we see active periodontitis (bone loss) despite classic treatment, Dr. Kim will loop in a partner in periodontics who specializes on the gums and everything under the gums.

How can I maintain clean teeth between professional cleanings?

Brushing two to four times daily with a soft/very soft bristle toothbrush, flossing, and using an antibacterial mouthwash will help keep your mouth clean. Additionally, avoiding constant snacking throughout the day or sipping drinks other than water will both help prevent cavities.
