TMJ Joint Pain

TMJ Treatment in Apex, NC — Jaw Pain Relief at Magnolia Way Dentistry

Chronic jaw pain, tension headaches, clicking or locking when you open your mouth — these are symptoms that many people live with for months or years without realizing that a dentist can help. TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders are among the most common — and most undertreated — sources of facial and jaw pain.

At Magnolia Way Dentistry in Apex, NC, Dr. Wayand provides thorough TMJ evaluation and personalized treatment focused on identifying the root cause of your discomfort and providing lasting relief — not just temporary symptom management.

What Is TMJ Disorder?

The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) connect your jaw to your skull and are among the most complex joints in the body. When these joints, the surrounding muscles, or the disc that cushions them become strained, misaligned, or inflamed, it can cause a range of symptoms that affect daily life.

TMJ disorder (also called TMD) can have multiple contributing causes, including:

• Teeth grinding (bruxism) or clenching, often during sleep

• Bite misalignment — how upper and lower teeth come together

• Jaw muscle tension related to stress, posture, or habits

• Previous jaw injury

• Arthritis affecting the temporomandibular joint

Common TMJ Symptoms

Symptoms of TMJ disorder vary from person to person but commonly include:

• Jaw pain or soreness, particularly in the morning or after eating

• Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when opening or closing the mouth

• Headaches — especially upon waking

• Facial tension or pain around the temples and cheeks

• Ear pain or a feeling of fullness in the ears

• Difficulty or pain when chewing, biting, or yawning

• Limited jaw movement or jaw locking

• Neck and shoulder tension

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms persistently, early evaluation can prevent the condition from progressing and reduce the likelihood of needing more extensive treatment later.

TMJ Treatment Options at Magnolia Way Dentistry

Treatment depends on the underlying cause and severity of your symptoms. Dr. Wayand takes a conservative, evidence-based approach — starting with the least invasive options and adjusting based on your response.

Custom Oral Appliances (Night Guards)

For patients whose TMJ symptoms are related to grinding or clenching, a custom-fitted oral appliance is often the first line of treatment. Unlike over-the-counter mouth guards, a custom appliance is precisely designed for your bite, providing optimal protection and muscle relief.

Bite Evaluation and Adjustment

When misalignment in how your teeth come together is contributing to TMJ strain, Dr. Wayand evaluates the bite in detail and may recommend conservative bite adjustments to reduce stress on the joint.

Muscle Relaxation Support

Jaw muscle tension is a significant contributor to many TMJ cases. Guidance on exercises, stretches, and behavioral modifications can meaningfully reduce muscle-related discomfort over time.

Lifestyle and Habit Modifications

Habits such as jaw clenching, gum chewing, nail biting, and certain sleep positions can all aggravate TMJ symptoms. Dr. Wayand helps patients identify and address contributing factors as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Why Early TMJ Treatment Matters

Many patients live with TMJ symptoms for years before seeking help, assuming it’s something they just have to manage. In many cases, early treatment can significantly reduce symptoms and prevent the joint damage and bite problems that develop when TMD is left unaddressed.

If your jaw pain, headaches, or clicking have been present for more than a few weeks, it’s worth having an evaluation — not just for immediate relief, but to protect your joint health long-term.

What to Expect at Your TMJ Evaluation in Apex, NC

•  A comprehensive review of your symptoms, history, and triggers

•  Clinical evaluation of jaw function, muscle tenderness, and bite alignment

•  Discussion of contributing lifestyle factors

•  A customized treatment plan with clear next steps

•  Ongoing monitoring and adjustment as treatment progresses

Dr. Wayand takes the time to explain what’s happening and why, so you understand your condition and feel confident in the treatment approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

TMJ pain most commonly presents as jaw soreness or stiffness, clicking or popping sounds when opening or closing the mouth, headaches (especially in the morning), facial tension around the temples and cheeks, and sometimes ear pain or neck tension. Symptoms can range from mild and intermittent to persistent and debilitating.

Yes — dentists are often the primary providers for TMJ treatment, especially when the disorder is related to bite alignment, grinding, or clenching. Dr. Wayand at Magnolia Way Dentistry evaluates and treats TMJ disorders using conservative approaches including custom oral appliances, bite evaluation, and guidance on muscle relaxation and habit modification.

A custom-made dental night guard and a TMJ oral appliance are related but not identical. Both are worn in the mouth during sleep, but a TMJ appliance is specifically designed to reduce strain on the temporomandibular joint and may position the jaw differently than a standard night guard. Dr. Wayand determines which is appropriate based on your specific diagnosis.

Yes. Psychological stress is a well-established contributor to TMJ disorders — it often leads to unconscious jaw clenching or teeth grinding, which places significant strain on the joint and surrounding muscles. Addressing both the physical components (bite, appliance) and behavioral contributors (stress, habits) is typically the most effective approach.

I had an excellent experience at Magnolia Way Dentistry. From the moment I walked in, the staff was incredibly welcoming and made the visit feel very personal. I recently had a filling done, and it was the smoothest procedure I’ve ever had, everything was handled with true professionalism. Dr. John is outstanding and truly the best. Highly recommend!

This is an excellent dental practice with warm and caring staff. The dentist is young and most kind. I found them when I moved to town, but had to wait for my other dental insurance to expire so that I could sign up for their annual plan, which is a great deal - probably better than having dental insurance. Highly recommend.

Very pleasant first time experience here. The entire staff very pleasant and answered any questions I had. My cleaning was great, and teeth feel very clean. Dr. John took time to answer my questions and gave me advice on how to keep teeth clean. Over all a great dental practice. I also like that fact that it is a private dental practice.
